HealthAI – The Global Agency for Responsible AI in Health

HealthAI (formerly known as I-DAIR) is a Geneva-based nonprofit organization focused on the use of Responsible AI in the health sector. It has recently launched a new strategy to work with countries to expand their capacity to regulate AI in health systems by establishing and supporting in-country regulatory mechanisms. Similar to the process for pharmaceuticals and medical devices, these regulatory mechanisms review, validate, and certify AI technologies against standards of safety, ethics, and efficacy. By working closely with international organisations, implementing global standards and forging connections between countries, HealthAI strengthens the global ecosystem that puts safe, effective AI tools in the hands of health workers and patients around the world.

Job Description:

The Health Technology Regulation Director will play a key role in supporting partner institutions to establish National Regulatory Mechanisms for Artificial Intelligence in Health, allowing HealthAI to expand into the subsequent core areas of work such as the Global Regulatory Network and the AI Solutions repository. He/She will coordinate closely with the team to implement his/her different duties, which include:

  • Supporting a successful and timely delivery of HealthAI’s strategic implementation plan in building capabilities and adequate mechanisms for the regulation of AI technologies in Health with HealthAI’s collaborating partners (governments, private/public sector etc.)
  • Provide strategic guidance to HealthAI’s leadership to adapt the implementation plan in the light of a fast-moving technological and political environment.
  • Analyze the global landscape of health technology regulations and validation mechanisms, specifically focusing on AI in Health, curating an internal AI resource database with up-to-date information on the evolving global standards, laws, policies and regulations.
  • Represent HealthAI as a subject matter expert for regulatory affairs on AI in Health in working groups with the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and more.
  • Be instrumental in shaping a global consensus for validation frameworks, processes and tools to be used to regulate AI applications in Health
  • Prepare reports, presentations, and policy briefs on AI ethics, policy and regulatory matters for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provide input for communications including articles, social media posts, blogs, etc.
  • Support strategic projects related to Responsible AI in health, including technology development efforts to strengthen information management capabilities, such as the envisioned AI solutions repository and early warning system.

Candidate Qualifications:

  • University degree or higher in a related field, such as Health Policy, Ethics, Law, Social Science, Public Health, International Development or relevant fields. AI or Data Science fields could be considered with a strong focus on AI ethics and regulation.
  • Demonstrated expertise and experience in AI ethics, regulatory affairs, policy analysis, or related areas with years in a relevant role.
  • In-depth knowledge of global AI regulations, guidelines, and ethical principles, particularly in the context of healthcare.
  • Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills to assess the complex ethical and policy implications of AI technologies as well as complex regulatory challenges and propose practical solutions.
  • Familiarity with emerging technologies, particularly AI, and their applications in healthcare is highly desirable
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to convey complex concepts to a diverse audience.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively in an international and interdisciplinary team.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines. Fluency in English (written and verbal) is required and fluency in French is a strong advantage.
